What he is scared of: Steve’s biggest fear is
that his family will end up like his parents, broken, divorced. Would give up
anything for his daughter.

stressed will drink heavily; quit smoking in 2005 when his daughter was
adopted.
React: Under Stress, Steve will leave his current surroundings, and
do anything to “escape” à He expresses anger loudly but will
never get physical.
Greatest secret/fault: When Steve found out his Wife could not conceive,
he was broken. He eventually had an affair with a woman and had a child with
her. Steve managed to trick his wife to adopt her 5 years later, with Cindy, his
wife, not knowing at all that she is blood related to Steve.
Steve Adler is a man with good intentions but flawed characteristics.
All he ever wanted in life was a child of his own. He was devastated when he
found out his Wife could not have a child and could not handle the pressure.
Steve Adler has two worlds. His family, is his own world, whom he loves dearly
and will do anything to see them happy. However, when this world gets the
slightest bit difficult, or complicated, Steve will do anything to escape it,
taking him to his “second world” or “second life.” To Steve, the actions he
commits in his “second life” do not affect his family or his ‘first life” as no
one knows about his other life, and therefore, to Steve at least, it is not
considered a sin.
Dear Aneesh,
ReplyDeleteSteve does seem to have some depth to him. The most interesting details are his love of crossword puzzles, his drinking Scotch, and his need to escape. Other than drinking, what does Steve do to decompress or get away from his own thoughts and fears? How are his ideas of family informed by his parent's divorce when he was 13? In what ways can you personally relate to him? How might his interest in solving puzzles or in keeping the peace change the story as it unfolds? The more that you get to know what makes him tick, the more he will become an authentic part of the story you're trying to tell.
