Video Project Proposal - What is success?

Video Title: What really defines success?

Theme/Concept Idea: Ideally, I would like to make a video that will make an impact on the way people see their life. I'm not trying to motivate anyone, as I myself have trouble talking about this issue. I feel as many college students also worry about this topic. I'm only a freshman, and fear I am missing out on doing something else in my life. As a computer science major, I absolutely hate doing it. However in a world where only so few degrees offers job security and good pay, I really have no choice. I feel as if many college students can relate to this, as I'm already second guessing my choices as a second semester freshman.

Synopsis/Free-write : My whole life I was told by my parents, in which my dad, an immigrant, who grew up in poverty and through education-built wealth, that if you go to school, get good grades, go to a good college and get a degree you will be successful. But what really defines success? To someone who's is homeless, success is simply finding a warm place to stay and eating a meal. Certainly, success has to be subjective, as each and every individual has a different upbringing. Unfortunately, to my immigrant parents, whose main purpose was to come here to give their selves and their children, me, a better life, success is defined by wealth. There's not a lot of options for me - everything I pick in college, everything I do, has to have some superior goal. For a lot of immigrant children, they’re forced to pick between being a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, Finance etc. – In other words, you’re not allowed to pick a major that isn’t seen as the old school definition of “successful.”

Genre: Non-fiction

Video-Style:

Ideally, the video will heavily reflect around the actual audio and not the video. For this video to not be boring and to look good, It's going to need good dialogue written out before. The video will be more so still images or clips of visual aids - but I might change this up, and add some sort of creative element to it. Either way, I would have to write out the entire script before I can actually incorporate visual elements. One concept I wish to do is to immediately break away and cut to a live scene, of me explaining some sort of concept. There's a lot of creative liberty I can take with transitions.

Length of Video: 5-7 minutes
Objectives: Persuade individuals to take a look
at their college career, and look at college from a more broader view.

Settings:
Office buildings, College Campus, artistic shots

  1. Dear Aneesh,

This is an ambitious topic--but it's also very rich with possibilities because you can use your experience to talk about how difficult it is to make choices when everything has an extra weight with it due to familial pressure. Rather than posting generic pictures about success, can you think about photos from your personal experience that could work? If you are going to write about being a first-generation in your family to be educated in America, you may have to go back to your family (as you mentioned in your comments). I would suggest writing about your dad, where he was educated, how he worked to get you to this country. I would write about your mom too, what her background is like and how her experiences have impressed on you the importance of succeeding., and the fear of disappointing. I think I may have said in class that the personal is political--that means that your experience as having parents who weren't born here is a reflection of the challenges of thousands of people like you whose stories need to be told. You don't have to come to any huge and startling conclusions for the entirety of young people--you just have to describe and try to understand your experience and show us what it's like to feel that added pressure that every decision you make is a step toward or away from the success your parents and family want from you.

I want you to spend some time looking for similar videos that handle this subject. I am interested to see where this goes.

  2. Very important topic for college students who come in either having no idea of what there going to do for the rest of their life, or even some idea of what there going to do. It is also opinionated, therefore you must prepare for other opinions and many debates on the subject, I overall am interested in seeing how you see this through.

  3. I think it is very interesting that you are exploring how success is relative, and how within the demographic of college age students like ourselves, we become extremely caught up in the rat race to becoming society's version of "successful." I know a lot of people struggle with this, and look forward to seeing how you address the subject!
